The Boston Globe reports that Novell is having difficulty winning acceptance for its free Linux operating system, which could force the Massachusetts-based company to lay off employees. The Globe article quotes a school district IT director from California who says he recently opted for Red Hat Linux over Novell’s product even though he had been a longtime Novell customer. Novell CEO Jack Messman disputes the rumors that his company is having trouble with its Linux effort. “I think we’re making good progress in our core markets,” says Messman, referring to the many businesses and organizations that had previously relied on Novell NetWare.
