Mayor Bloomberg thinks that cell phones in school are nothing but a distraction, but parents feel they are a necessary lifeline in times of emergency. On Wednesday, the debate came to the New York City Council, which has proposed legislation to ban cell phone use in city public schools. However, students would be able to possess them. The debate erupted earlier in the year when the city police department began searching for phones at security checkpoints. Parents and school officials alike showed up at the council meeting to argue their side. Parents feel that with students traveling many miles and sometimes hours to get to school, having the ability to contact parents is a safety issue.
