$100 laptop moves closer to reality

Sci-Tech Today reports that Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the “One Laptop Per Child” non-profit organization, announced that the proposed “$100 laptop” will be priced around $140 at launch. However, he says that this is just a start price and eventually with volume, the price should drop to $100 in 2008, and could eventually drop to $50. Negroponte feels that the program should be able to reach price goals by emphasizing essentials and eliminating the need for sales and marketing costs which drive up the price of commercial PCs. Because the laptops run on the Linux OS, shipping the laptop to millions in developing countries could also make Linux a standard on desktops in the same way that it is the standard on servers. OLPC plans to release a test version to developers in the third quarter of 2006, and educators in the fourth quarter. Plans are to ship the laptop for regular use in the second quarter of 2007…
