CNN.com reports that a new device can convert print to audio, helping the blind read. The new device combines a personal digital assistant and a digital camera. After scanning the print and taking a picture, the device uses software to read aloud the printed message. While the technology to turn print to audio has been around for about 30 years, the size of such devices has been wildly prohibitive. The new device is about the size of a paperback book, and should allow the visually impaired more independence. One user was able to “read” menus, cooking directions and more.
