The New York Times reports that New York City plans to investigate the possibility of establishing a citywide broadband network similar to the ones implemented in Philadelphia and San Francisco. A study will be commissioned by the city’s Economic Development Corporation, and will examine “whether there is a need for a citywide broadband network as a municipal initiative.” The commission also plans to investigate the legal, technical, logistical, and economic challenges that such an undertaking would involve.
