Peter Laarman, blogging for the Huffington Post, opines that the proposed GOP voucher plan is “immoral.” Republicans claim that a $100 million voucher plans will “deliver” low-income students from failing schools, allowing these students to attend private and religious schools. Laarman believes there are three things wrong with this plan. First, the plight of the low-income student is mere “window dressing” for the problem. The voucher is just another subsidy to the middle and upper middle-class families who can already afford private education. Second, the vouchers aren’t worth nearly enough to actually deliver the low-income students to other schools. These vouchers would have to be scaled to reflect family resources. Third, the idea of “failing” public schools is an urban myth, considering a recent Education Department survey that showed public school students did as well, or better than, their private counterparts…
