Silver Spring, MD (September 14, 2006)–Discovery Education announced today that Melanie Bowen has been named executive vice president, Home Services. Bowen previously served as senior vice president, Business Planning and Operations for Discovery Education. The announcement was made by Steven Sidel, president of Discovery Education.
In her new role, Bowen will oversee all aspects of Discovery Education’s consumer services. These are highlighted by COSMEO, the innovative online homework help service launched by Discovery Education in March 2006. Featuring content from the world’s leading education media sources, COSMEO offers students and families comprehensive broadband-delivered, curriculum correlated multimedia resources that include more than 30,000 educational video segments, 60,000 encyclopedia articles, 20,000 images and clip art images, interactive “brain games,” online reference materials and more.
“I’m delighted that Melanie will be leading COSMEO and our efforts to develop, create and distribute compelling, consumer-based educational services,” said Steve Sidel. “Her exemplary experience with Discovery and passion for education make her the perfect choice to help Discovery tap into these powerful new business opportunities.”
Bowen joined Discovery Education in 2004, and during this time has spearheaded numerous key initiatives that helped drive the division’s rapid growth. Among her achievements during this time are the creation of an implementation, training, and customer support team for Discovery Education’s school services; development of the industry-leading Discovery Educator Network that trains and supports educators across America; completion of nine acquisitions for the division; and the development, launch, and marketing of COSMEO.
A native of Boston, Melanie Bowen has also served as vice president, Affiliate Finance for Discovery Communications, Inc. Before joining Discovery, she worked in Johannesburg, South Africa and Washington, DC for the international consulting firm, McKinsey & Company and as a diplomat posted to the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
