New York, NY (September 18, 2006) – Scholastic Education, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, announces the release of Book Time(tm), a research-based program that helps teachers develop children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills in early childhood classrooms. Aligned with Early Reading First standards, Book Time instruction utilizes three oral readings of each book, focusing on a different reading skill each time: vocabulary, comprehension and content area-knowledge/text awareness. Each reading gives students a chance to practice a specific skill, while multiple exposures to each text allow for further discovery and understanding within the story.
“Children love to hear their favorite stories again and again. Now, scientific research confirms that re-reading stories provides a powerful strategy for learning new vocabulary and engaging children’s deeper understanding of stories and texts,” said Dr. Susan Neuman, the program’s author.
Featuring language-rich books with vivid illustrations and photos, Book Time titles were selected to provide exposure to a variety of genres including both fiction and nonfiction. Research shows that to build the real-world knowledge required for school success, young children require opportunities to hear and actively discuss content area topics. Under the guidance of advisor Dr. Nell K. Duke, half of the Book Time lesson plans focus on informational books, bringing essential learning to early childhood classroom read-aloud time.
To support English-language learners, the program is available in two versions, Book Time English and English-Spanish PLUS. Both versions include 28 English titles (two copies of each title), a Lending Library Chart, and a Teacher Guide. Book Time English-Spanish PLUS includes, in addition to the English-language titles, 28 Spanish titles (two copies of each title). Both versions include targeted strategies for working with English-Language Learners.
Book Time focuses on five key elements:
* Interactive read-alouds
* Multiple readings with purpose
* Direct vocabulary instruction
* Accessing informational text* Gaining real-world knowledge
Book Time English is available for $325 and Book Time English-Spanish PLUS is available for $595. For more information on Book Time programs, visit www.scholastic.com/booktime or call 1-800-SCHOLASTIC.
