PLANO, TEXAS– Recognizing the short- and long-term health concerns children face from exposure to poor indoor air quality, Smith System has earned GREENGUARD Environmental Institute’s (GEI) GREENGUARD certification for its entire product portfolio of desks, chairs and library furniture.

As an industry independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air quality, GEI created the GREENGUARD certification program in order to recognize companies whose products meet or exceed stringent requirements for low chemical emissions. To achieve certification, rigorous testing protocol was performed on each material type used in the Smith System product line. Additionally, each new or enhanced product must undergo the same testing protocol process, and in order to maintain GREENGUARD certification, Smith System’s entire line is required to be recertified annually.

“Smith System is continuously working to contribute to a healthy environment,” said Charlie Risdall, CEO, Smith System. “To achieve this certification, we had to examine all aspects of our manufacturing processes– from materials to machinery. In addition, we have worked hard to reduce waste and increase our recyclable products.

“In Smith System’s 100-year plus history, I’ve never been more proud of our company, employees and products. Because of the efforts we undertook that earned us the GREENGUARD certification, I know that school staff and students can breathe a little easier.”

Of primary concern in school environments is exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from sources commonly used in educational institutions such as furnishings, paint, cleaning agents, solvents, flooring products and building materials. Recent studies have indicated that exposure to VOCs may increase the risk of childhood asthma.

Since children spend a significant portion of their time in schools or at day care facilities, use of GREENGUARD certified products helps to improve indoor air quality by reducing harmful pollutants, such as VOCs.

“GREENGUARD believes that the indoor air quality of our nation’s schools should be a very high priority,” said Carl Smith, CEO, GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. “We encourage companies like Smith System to actively seek testing and certification to verify that the chemical emissions of their products won’t affect the environment of our schools.”
