El Segundo, Calif.–October 5, 2006–Lehigh University, a nationally ranked teaching and research institution located in Bethlehem, Pa., has teamed up with Accordent Technologies, a leading provider of solutions for creating, publishing and managing online rich media presentations, to deliver multimedia recordings of daily classes for students to review online.
The Office of Distance Education at Lehigh University began offering online courses in January 2000 using lectures derived from its satellite broadcast system. Within a few years, students were demanding higher quality online presentations and Lehigh staff began investigating products that could automate the process of incorporating video, instructor visuals, PowerPoint elements and supporting documents in high-impact presentations, as well as ensure that archived materials could be easily managed, and monitored. It was also important to Lehigh that the capture devices in the classrooms could be scheduled remotely, taking into account semester dates and exam periods.
Following a rigorous evaluation process led by University Distance Education and IT staff, Lehigh chose Accordent’s all-in-one Capture Station and Media Management solutions to solve their needs.
“We looked at a number of options and the Accordent solution was the only one that met all of our requirements, including supporting both Real and Windows media as well as complete post-production editing capabilities,” said Peggy Kane, senior instructional technologist at Lehigh. “Accordent’s solution also offered clear benefits in terms of affordability, ease of use, flexibility and overall functionality and student feedback on the quality of the integrated course materials has been positive.”
Another very important factor in Lehigh’s decision was reliability. The fact that over 450 educational institutions rely on Accordent solutions to create and integrate dynamic, rich media content with key distance learning, certification and subscription initiatives and that the Accordent Capture Station ships on the latest IBM/Lenovo hardware (with its standard three-year onsite warranty) gives extra peace of mind to the Lehigh staff.
The Accordent Media Communications Platform is the industry’s only comprehensive suite of media authoring, capture and management solutions designed exclusively to integrate and scale in advanced information technology environments. These solutions enable presenters of any technical level to create compelling rich media presentations that can include live or on-demand streaming media, synchronized with images captured from any VGA-enabled device, including laptops, document cameras, projectors and electronic white boards and can be viewed by all audiences using any browser (on Windows, Mac and Linux desktops) or downloaded to MP3 players via an automatic podcasting capability.
Lehigh is currently using Accordent to offer courses that make up its certificate program in Regulatory Affairs and is already planning to increase the number of courses they create using this solution, since it is a very reliable and cost-effective way of developing extremely high-quality materials.
“We know that being able to respond to student needs by providing excellent course materials is of the highest priority to Lehigh University and is key to the institution’s student retention and recruitment efforts,” said Mike Newman, CEO of Accordent. “The Accordent solution is playing an important role in helping Lehigh meet its distance learning goals and we’re looking forward to expanding our relationship to help support additional teaching initiatives with the University.”
