David Thomas is working on a tentative agreement with Greenville County Schools to turn over a computer that contains the Social Security numbers and contact information of over 59,000 students. The computer containing the information was purchased at a district auction by an owner of a company named the WH Group. On Wednesday, Thomas said he planned to sign an agreement that would turn over the computer to an expert, who would document the computer’s contents. Then, he was hoping the district could take possession of the machine. Thomas, an attorney, has broached the possibility of a class-action lawsuit over the issue if the district doesn’t notifying students that their personal information was compromised.
