CNET reports that Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said that his for-profit company, Wikia, is going to give away software, computing storage, and network access that web site builders would need to make their own collaborative web sites. Wikia is a commercial counterpart to the nonprofit Wikipedia, and will provide customers who meet the company’s criteria with 100 percent of the advertising revenue of the sites that they create using the tools. Wikia hopes to build on the success of Wikipedia’s “anyone-can-edit” model, and will use the same underlying software. This could cause disruption in web business models, which typically provide free business services to customers, but take a percentage of advertising revue in return.
