New Smith System Carrels Foster Individual Learning While Conserving Valuable Classroom Space

PLANO, TEXAS (December 20, 2006)–Addressing the need for flexible and functional K-12 furniture that can be configured to support individual student learning requirements, classroom furniture manufacturer Smith System has introduced a new line of carrels. Ideal for multiple classroom situations, the innovative new Quick Carrels provide teachers and students with portable work areas for homerooms and study hall classes, testing or self-paced learning curriculum.

“While the use of carrels is not new to the classroom, we believe that the innovative form and functionality of the Quick Carrel design will change how carrels are used and viewed,” said Bill Risdall, Vice President Marketing and Product Development, Smith System. “Students will benefit from having a private and personalized space of their own’ to study and faculty will be quickly drawn to its interactive structure and mobility.”

Unlike traditional carrels which can be perceived as barriers to student and teacher interaction, the Quick Carrel’s L-shaped design and 50-inch height provides privacy while allowing instructors to supervise and provide feedback and instruction as needed.

“Using feedback from teachers and administrators, we approached the carrel design with the goals of flexibility and functionality,” said Risdall. “In today’s K-12 environment, classroom furniture must be adaptable to meet changing curriculum and teaching styles. Either as a standalone or as part of a four person study module, the Quick Carrel is designed to help students succeed.”

With stability and plenty of substance as a divider, the 27 inch deep x 38 inch wide x 50 inch high carrel includes a porcelain white board and cork board walls that can be used for instruction or posting notes. Additionally, the lightweight carrel has lockable wheels for mobility and can be nested for compact, out-of-the-way storage.

Addressing industry concerns about indoor air quality in schools, the Quick Carrel–like all Smith System products–has received GREENGUARD Children and Schools Indoor

Air Quality certification from the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (, an industry independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air quality.
