Judge: mayor can’t take over LAUSD

The New York Times reports that a judge has struck down an attempt by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa to assume partial control of the Los Angeles Unified School District, currently the nation’s second-largest school system. The judge said the law, scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, interfered with the governing authority of the school board. Villaraigosa said he planned to appeal the decision.
