CALGARY, AB — January, 10, 2007 — SMART Technologies Inc. announces that it has surpassed CAN$1 billion dollars in cumulative sales and has outfitted over 450,000 classrooms worldwide with SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards. With a cumulative annual growth rate of 29 percent over a five year basis, 40.5 per cent over a 10-year period, the privately owned company continues to lead the global education market segment and remain profitable. It holds 59 per cent of the interactive whiteboard market segment in the United Kingdom. Its products are in 82 per cent of the top 500 school districts in the United States. In Mexico, the Enciclomedia project has equipped more than 145,000 Mexican classrooms with technology products worth US$1.8 billion dollars–and SMART has been the single largest provider of interactive whiteboards to the project, supplying upwards of 59,000 SMART Board interactive whiteboards.

The company is also supporting more district-wide adoptions in the United States. The Bellevue School District in Washington State, for instance, purchased almost 900 SMART Board interactive whiteboards so one could be installed in every classroom. Dorchester School District 2 in South Carolina purchased more than 1,200. Numerous other school systems are also standardizing on SMART products. The Calgary Board of Education, the largest school district in western Canada, has standardized on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and other SMART products for district-wide implementation.

SMART’s name is synonymous with innovation, quality, value and commitment, and it offers the world’s broadest selection of interactive whiteboard products, accessories, training and support. The company continues to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit that has driven it from the start by developing new products and regularly adding to its growing patent portfolio. Over the past 20 years, the SMART product line has expanded to include the latest innovation in interactive pen displays, interactive digital signage, wireless slates and software. Having built the interactive whiteboard industry from scratch, SMART knows that innovation and meeting customer needs are the only engines of success. SMART Board interactive whiteboards now engage more than 15 million students in more than 100 countries every day.

“Reaching these milestones is not just a testament to the large number of SMART staff who deliver to a high standard of excellence and customer care in their work every day, but to customers themselves, who continue to test, evaluate and purchase our products over those of our competitors,” says Nancy Knowlton, CEO of SMART Technologies Inc. “Whether we are talking with a single teacher in Wolverhampton about using SMART Board interactive whiteboards with PDAs or to education ministries for a whole country, we strive to set standards of innovation, quality, service and excellence that make SMART the only real choice.”

A brief history of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard

Currently in its sixth generation, SMART Board interactive whiteboards are expanding to include larger models, models integrated with projectors and other tools, and a variety of supporting hardware and software.
