1,650 SMART Board interactive whiteboards to be installed in DiGi Scuola classrooms across Central Southern Italy

LONDON, UK — January 10, 2007 — SMART Technologies Inc. announces that 1,650 SMART Board interactive whiteboards will be installed in 550 secondary public schools across Central Southern Italy, through the DiGi Scuola project. The initiative is financed by the Department for Reforms and Innovations in Public Administration, and will be implemented by Innovazione Italia, a public agency, and the Minister of Public Education. The DiGi Scuola project aims to improve digital literacy and reduce the technology gap between the classroom and everyday life through the introduction of new teaching technologies.

SMART Board interactive whiteboards will be used by 3,300 teachers to engage close to 35,000 students with digital lessons incorporated into Italian literature and mathematics teaching. The interactive whiteboards boards will be installed in three classrooms in each of the 550 selected schools throughout the regions of Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Puglia, Molise, Sardinia and Sicily.

The DiGi Scuola project supports the implementation of classroom technology in Italian schools, so they can keep pace with schools in the rest of Europe and around the world. The Regional School Offices (USR, Uffici Scolastici Regionali) will work directly with all participating schools to ensure each chosen classroom is equipped with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard, projector and laptop. SMART products are supported by InterVideo, SMART´s Italian distributor, which is based in Verona. InterVideo is working with Italware, a reseller based in Rome that was awarded the contract after winning the call for tender. Italware will install the SMART products and conduct a series of training sessions for teachers involved in the DiGi Scuola project on how to integrate the SMART Board interactive whiteboards into their curriculum.

"SMART has been creating innovative products for educators for 20 years," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART´s CEO. "The decision by the Italian government to use SMART Board interactive whiteboards to improve digital literacy demonstrates its commitment to providing Italian students with an engaging learning environment and the technology skills to succeed in the 21st century."
