Feds issue guidelines for flu pandemic

The New York Times reports that federal health officials have issued new pandemic flu guidelines to states and cities.  The new guidelines recommend that in the event of a severe flu outbreak, schools should close for up to three months, working hours should be staggered to avoid congestion on mass transit, and ballgames as well as movies should be canceled.  While officials recognize that such actions would cause great disruption to daily life, they argue that such measures would be needed to provide enough time to produce vaccines.  In addition, these guidelines would help save lives, as flu viruses attack in waves lasting up to two months…
