PLATO Learning has announced the release of two new products designed to build and improve writing skills. PLATO Essential Writing Process and Practice and PLATO Fundamental Writing Process and Practice are designed to teach writing strategies, grammar, and mechanics for middle school, high school, and adult learners.

PLATO Essential Writing Process and Practice teaches strategies and grammar skills that are commonly taught in the third and fourth grades, but uses methods that are appropriate for older learners. It contains approximately 26 hours of instruction delivered through writing and grammar practice courses.

PLATO Fundamental Writing Process and Practice builds upon the writing foundation laid in Essential Writing. It teaches strategies used within the writing process and the contextual usage of grammar skills commonly taught in the fifth and sixth grades, using methods that are relevant to both older and remedial learners. The curriculum offers 12 Writing Strategies modules and 17 Grammar and Mechanics modules.

Both curricula are designed to standards and guidelines set by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL). The company says these two products work to improve student writing “by teaching students to value writing as a real-world’ communicative activity and by emphasizing writing as a process, not a product.”

Top-end pricing on both products is $300 per classroom license. Volume and multiple course discounts are available.
