COLUMBUS, Ohio–The need for intervention for struggling readers in Grades 3-12 can be met with Reading Success, now published by SRA/McGraw-Hill. Reading Success expands SRA´s respected array of research-proven intervention programs that use a highly explicit, systematic manner of instruction. It is ideal for middle and high school students due to its textbook-style layout and rich content.

"We´re proud of the research surrounding our intervention products," said Daniel Caton, president of McGraw-Hill Learning Group, which includes SRA/McGraw-Hill. "SRA has a long history of bringing products to market with a proven track record for improving student performance. We are happy to add Reading Success to this list."

The program is based on research principles of instructional design that include teaching students to use specific strategies or reason strategically when they encounter barriers to comprehension. It is designed to support students as they learn new strategies, allowing them to review every skill daily in a varied way.

"Reading Success is effective with students who can decode but struggle with comprehension, achieve below expectations in content area coursework, and perform below expectations on standardized and content-based assessment," said Ruth Cochrane, vice president and publisher at SRA/McGraw-Hill.

The types of comprehension stressed in Reading Success include:
– Vocabulary
– Asking questions
– Memory techniques
– Literal comprehension
– Reading content
– Details, pronouns, classification, and main idea

The author of the program, Robert Dixon, specializes in the design of instruction, with an emphasis on effective and efficient instruction for all students.

"Reading Success focuses on teaching students reading comprehension strategies applied to the types of content the students need to be able to read. The strategies are not simply ´covered´ in the program, but are thoroughly taught to ensure that all the students will learn and apply them in their reading for both language arts and the content areas," Dixon said.
