The Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) program awardsdiscretionary grants to local educational agencies to support theimplementation of SLCs and activities to improve student academic achievementin large public high schools with enrollments of 1,000 or more students. SLCsinclude structures such as freshman academies, multi-grade academies organizedaround career interests or other themes, “houses” in which smallgroups of students remain together throughout high school, and autonomousschools-within-a-school, as well as personalization strategies, such as studentadvisories, family advocate systems, and mentoring programs.
