Prince Frederick, Md. — August 1, 2007 — Recorded Books, the premier publisher of audiobooks for K-12 schools and a Haights Cross Communications company, has released the third level of Dr. Janet Allen´s Plugged-in to Reading literacy program. Dr. Allen, respected researcher, teacher, and author, created Level 3 of this reading program especially for students in grades 9-12 to complement her already successful Level 1 and Level 2.

Plugged-in to Reading was born from intensive research and is based entirely in high-interest, authentic literature and complementary nonfiction readings combined with unabridged Recorded Books. The program, geared toward middle and high schools, uses the gradual release of responsibility approach, moving readers from teacher-directed instruction to peer-supported instruction and finally to self-directed learning.

Unique to Level 3 are "Classic Connections," resources that are used to build a bridge from each contemporary novel in the set to classic authors, works of literature, or themes, such as connecting Matthew Olshan´s Finn to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. In addition, Level 3 Core Novel materials include SAT test-preparation lessons that teach the students the skills and strategies they need to succeed on standardized tests.

"We are proud to offer the next level of Dr. Janet Allen´s Plugged-in to Reading for high school," says Will DeLamater, Recorded Books´ School Division Manager. "Dr. Allen has carefully chosen the 48 titles in Level 3 and we are confident that every Plugged-in student will find a book to get excited about."

In Baldwin County, Alabama, the middle schools have had such success with Levels 1 and 2 that they´ve decided to bring Level 3 into their high schools. "The literature choices that were made in this Plugged-in to Reading series ? just light [the students´] fire. They go beyond ? it´s just amazing the difference from the beginning of the year to the end."

Already available are Level 1 for grades 5-7 and Level 2 for grades 7-9. Dr. Allen is currently working on an extension of the program that will focus on reading and writing with nonfiction texts.
