Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., August 15, 2007 — Learning Plus Associates, a not-for-profit provider of targeted educational intervention programs for students in grades K-12, has announced that it has contributed $100,000 to the Fontana Unified School District in Southern California, bringing its total contributions to $300,000 to date. In addition, it contributed $75,000 to the Katrina Relief Fund for Houston Independent School District.

Learning Plus is dedicated to raising student achievement by developing and distributing products based on sound educational research. Its Standards Plus® programs in Language Arts and Mathematics teach specific elements of the subject-area learning required for students to succeed on California´s statewide proficiency tests. The programs require minimal teacher preparation and less than fifteen minutes a day of class time, but have been proven to be effective in raising student achievement and teaching the standards.

Award-Winning Programs

Standards Plus programs are state-approved and are designed to assist in closing the "achievement gap" that plagues minority and impoverished students. Written to California state standards, its lessons supplement a school district´s curricula. Although they are targeted to low-performing students, the mini-lessons have been demonstrated to benefit all students. The first school district to utilize Standards Plus, Fontana Unified was recognized by the Education Trust as one of eight American school districts that are "dispelling the myth that poor and minority children cannot learn to high academic levels," according to its award.

In presenting the Education Trust award, then-Education Secretary Rod Paige pointed out that Fontana´s schools "outpaced the average state improvement in nearly every grade level" between 1998 and 2002, "including making two to three times the statewide gains at the middle and high school level." Senator Barbara Boxer noted that the Fontana district "serves as a model for the state and the nation."

A Unique Organization

Learning Plus Associates was founded as the Fontana Educational Institute by the Fontana Unified School District in 2002 in order to sell lessons that its teachers had written. These lessons form the basis for the Standards Plus programs that the organization provides to schools throughout the state, along with consulting services on how best to implement the programs and integrate them into existing curricula. As part of its agreement with the school district, Learning Plus Associates returns profits from sales of its products and services to the district. Although it is still young as an organization, it has returned nearly $100,000 a year to the Fontana school district, while continuing to develop new products such as World History and Intervention Algebra. It has also provided free materials and training to schools throughout California.
