Prince Frederick, MD — August 27th, 2007 — Recorded Books, the premier publisher of audiobooks for K-12 schools and a Haights Cross Communications company, announces that it has sold over 500 units of Dr. Janet Allen?s Plugged-in to Reading literacy program. Since its release in May of 2006, Plugged-in to Reading has been selected for classrooms in 24 states from Maine to California.

Plugged-in to Reading is a reading program for middle and high school students based on a classroom library of 48 high-interest books, each accompanied by an unabridged, professionally narrated audiobook from Recorded Books. The program was written by Dr. Janet Allen, an international consultant, researcher, author, innovator, and veteran educator who has become a major force in literacy instruction.

Indiana?s Joliet Public Schools, District 86 purchased 15 units of Plugged-in to Reading after hearing about the success of their neighboring district, Crete-Monee. This purchase put Plugged-in to Reading sales-to-date at 504 units.

?Crete-Monee piloted Plugged-in to Reading last year. They sent six people to the Plugged-in to Reading Institute and shared their plan with Joliet,? says Plugged-in to Reading consultant Angela Crouse. ?Now Joliet is planning to pilot Plugged-in to Reading in their own district in several ways. Some of the 7th- and 8th-grade classrooms are self-contained, some are resource rooms, and some are all-day language arts, with several periods throughout the day including gifted classes. This experience will allow Joliet to look at all types of students in different learning environments and determine how Plugged-in to Reading affects their outcome.?
