The research department at Children’s Hospital Boston has developed a series of web-based Flash tutorials to present complex medical and biological concepts in an interactive, user-friendly format. These free science “interactives” are useful for students and educators, as well as anyone interested in the latest medical research and how it works. Recent additions to the site include “How Cancer Grows and Spreads,” an animated feature that illustrates the growth, progression, and metastasis of carcinomas, and “The Neuron,” which allows users to experiment with a virtual neuron to see what conditions are needed to make it fire and with a circuit of interconnected neurons to see how neurons work together to process information. Other tools on the site let users manipulate stem cells and control cell structure.
