LEADER – FIND THEM ON FACEBOOK, FOLLOW THEM ON TWITTER

MCHENRY, Ill., Sept. 2, 2009 – Follett Software Company, which earlier this year was ranked one of the world’s top companies using Twitter to recruit new employees, can now be followed on Twitter as well as found on Facebook.

The company—which helps K-12 school districts manage key learning resources such as library materials, textbooks, school assets and information for data-driven decision making—doesn’t often find itself ranked on a list that includes the likes of Burger King, Expedia, Hershey Company, Mattel, MTV and UPS. But when Job-Hunt.org recently published its list of the world’s “Top 50 Employers Using Twitter for Recruiting,” Follett Software Co. staked its claim as a company that recognizes the potential of social networking.

Now, Follett Software Company has created a page on Facebook, the website that currently has more than 250 million active users worldwide. In addition, Follett has created a feed on Twitter (twitter.com/FollettSoftware), the micro-blogging service that in 2009 has witnessed a dramatic surge in daily users.

“We were early to the game in job recruiting on Twitter, and now we’ve taken the next logical networking steps,” said Michael Campbell, marketing director, Follett Software Co. “As one of the educational industry’s top software companies, it is imperative that we are an active social media participant, for both our customers and employees alike.”

Greenville County Schools Live on Lawson Enterprise Solutions

ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 26, 2009 – Greenville County Schools in South Carolina recently completed the first phase of an organization-wide deployment of an enterprise software system from Lawson Software (Nasdaq: LWSN). This Lawson deployment includes Lawson System Foundation and the Lawson S3 Enterprise Financial Management and Strategic Human Capital Management suites as well as Lawson Business Intelligence. These application suites are helping the district centralize key business functions and gain a broader view of financial data across the organization. Lawson Professional Services provided implementation services for the system rollout.
The School District of Greenville County is located in Greenville, S.C., and is the largest school district in the state. The district employs 9,000 people and serves approximately 70,000 students in 90 school locations. Eight Greenville County high schools are in the top 6 percent in the nation, making the list of Newsweek’s Best High Schools for 2009.
The Greenville County district had previously relied on a legacy system that included numerous disparate home-grown systems along with many manual processes. In order to streamline its financial and human resource systems, decrease paper-based practices and enable continued technology growth, the district needed to upgrade and overhaul its entire operation. After choosing the Lawson solution, the school district launched what it has dubbed “The GRETIL Project” — Greenville Realizes Efficiency Through Integrating Lawson. The Lawson applications are also helping the district achieve additional objectives:
·         Replace manual paper processes and improve efficiencies through automated work flow, including requisition approval and budget transfer process flow.
·         Create a centralized repository of information, creating efficiencies through data accuracy and reduced redundancy and allowing for meaningful, synchronized data from the district office through all the schools.
·         Activate a new accounting structure to standardize relevant financial data with the ability to produce consolidated financial statements and spreadsheets from a single repository.
·         Provide ease of use for staff and streamlined customer service.

“Increasing constituent and regulatory demands for greater accountability pose significant challenges to school districts with tight budgets,” said Brian Murphy, general manager, Public Sector, Lawson. “Lawson helps districts simplify administration, improve accuracy and meet their imperatives for greater efficiency and transparency, so they have a smooth path for the real business of educating kids.”
Phase 2 of Greenville’s system rollout will focus on additional components of the Lawson Strategic Human Capital Management suite, including Teacher Contract Administration, Time and Attendance, and Employee Self-Service. More information about this overall project can be found at www.greenville.k12.sc.us/gcsd/depts/finance/gretil.asp.

Public sector organizations rely on Lawson’s solutions to help meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders —students, employees, parents, taxpayers, vendors and communities.

IBM appeals to girls with microchipped butterflies

Tracking Monarch butterflies on their route from Toronto to the Mexican border might be just what a 12-year-old girl needs to spark an interest in science and technology, InfoWorld reports. Twenty-five girls ages 12 and 13 released a group of microchipped butterflies last week, one of several activities on the roster this year at IBM Canada Inc.’s 3-day E.X.I.T.E. camp. Hosted every summer the IBM Toronto Lab in Markham, Ont., E.X.I.T.E. encourages pre-teen girls to take an interest in technology and engineering and inspire them to pursue further studies in high school. School counselors and teachers nominate camp participants for the IBM-funded program, which is restricted to females in grades seven and eight. This year, the girls created robots out of Legos and programmed them to dance, performed DNA experiments on bananas, and searched for film canisters filled with stickers and quiz questions using GPS. Other activities included learning about green technology and developing cartoon animations using Scratch, a 3D programming language with a graphical interface. "It’s designed to give them positive female role models in the technology and engineering fields, to give them an idea of hands-on approaches to learning about these areas, and to encourage them to pursue and explore careers in these areas," said Sarah Naqvi, co-chair of the E.X.I.T.E. Camp in Toronto…

Attention Students, Teachers, and Parents: World’s Largest K – 12 Science and Technology Competition Now Accepting Entries For 2010 Program

Arlington, VA, September 1, 2009 – The Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards Program, the world’s largest K–12 science and technology competition, is now accepting entries for its 2010 program year. ExploraVision students are able to discover the wonders of science and the potential for technological advancement, while using their imaginations to contemplate a better future. The deadline for entries is February 2, 2010.

The ExploraVision program, sponsored by Toshiba and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), challenges teams of 2-4 students to research scientific principles and current technologies as the basis for designing innovative technologies that could exist in 20 years. Since the program’s inception in 1992, nearly 260,000 students have submitted entries.

In addition to providing students with the opportunity to win money they can use for college tuition, ExploraVision gives educators a valuable tool for helping motivate students to excel in science. As a testament to its value as an educational tool, the program has become so popular among teachers that many across the U.S. and Canada now include it as part of their regular science curriculum. Notably, the ExploraVision program was crafted to motivate and inspire students in STEM—or science, technology, engineering, and math education—a focus area recognized for its importance by many top educators and policy makers, including the Obama administration.

Mr. Yoshihide Fujii, Chairman & CEO of Toshiba America, Inc., noted: “As an environmentally conscious company, Toshiba strives in all its business practices to contribute to the future of a sustainable world, and we believe strongly that technological innovation holds the key to many of the solutions that are needed.  In this regard, the ExploraVision program is a clear reflection of our corporate vision. We’re proud of the way it is helping to foster tomorrow’s innovators and young minds, and helping promote continuous innovation, imagination, and sustainability."

"Teachers are always looking for fresh new ways to motivate students," said Francis Eberle, Executive Director, NSTA. “The ExploraVision competition is an excellent way to spark the imagination of students and inspire excellence in science learning.”

Students on the four first-place ExploraVision winning teams will each receive a $10,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond valued at maturity.  Students on second-place teams will each receive a $5,000 bond valued at maturity. (Canadian winners receive Canada bonds purchased for the equivalent issue price in Canadian dollars.) The eight teams will also receive an expenses-paid trip with their families, mentor and coach to Washington, DC for a gala awards weekend in June 2010. Activities will include a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and a Science Showcase during which the students will display and demonstrate their winning ideas and sightseeing. The highlight of ExploraVision weekend will be a gala awards banquet and ceremony where students will be formally recognized for their creativity and accomplishments.

For more information or an application for 2010, visit www.exploravision.org or e-mail exploravision@nsta.org. Follow ExploraVision on Twitter at @exploravision or join the ExploraVision Facebook Fan Page.

Bloxx Speeding up Web Filtering at Schoharie Schools

Bloxx Inc., the Web content filtering specialist, today announced that Schoharie Schools is using Tru-View Technology to track and filter Internet access for its 800 users. Over the first few months of use, the Schoharie Schools are already seeing increased user productivity and safety particularly because of Tru-View Technology’s ability to stop and block anonymous proxies in real-time.

One of the challenges for Schoharie Schools was the inability of its previous Web filtering solution from SonicWall in handling traffic volumes and dynamically blocking access to anonymous proxy servers. Anonymous proxies are sites that allow users to logon and surf the entire internet anonymously. They have an extremely high creation rate and are used as a means to bypass Web filters.

After evaluating a number of solutions, Schoharie Schools chose Bloxx’s Web content filtering appliance which conducts real-time classification of Web pages even if the Web page has never been accessed before.

“We are now confident that the students are surfing the Internet safely” said David Holmes, Network & Systems Technician at Schoharie Schools. “Bloxx Web filter’s power at blocking anonymous proxies is unrivalled. In one year’s use I have only had one instance of users’ accessing a proxy site that the Bloxx appliance missed and that was quickly rectified by their outstanding support department. With our previous solution the students could find new proxy servers faster than I could block them.”

“Not only has it increased student safety, it’s saving me so much time as I’ve only had to report one misclassified Website this year to Bloxx compared to 10 a week with the previous solution,” David enthused.

David added, “I can easily define different groups with different access restrictions with Bloxx, which has been hugely beneficial and a time saver for us. Being able to do this has greatly reduced the tight rope we had to walk in the past between blocking content that might not have been appropriate for students but should have been allowed for the teachers.”

“I find the extra features that come as standard with the Bloxx appliance to be extremely beneficial. An extra layer of protection is provided through its anti-virus and anti-phishing control. With Bloxx I now spend much less time managing content filtering,” concluded David.

Bloxx Tru-View Technology uses internationally patent pending technology to analyse and categorise Web pages quicker and more accurately than other Web filters which use manual URL classification and keyword scoring alone.
Using advanced intelligent identification and analysis techniques, Tru-View Technology provides instant classification of Web content as soon as it is accessed, even if the content has not been seen by anyone before.
Bloxx Tru-View Technology helps organisations proactively manage users’ access to Web content which might lower productivity, expose the organisation to risk and liability or pose a network security threat.
An estimated 1.5 million + users already benefit from enhanced security and performance with low administration and no cost per user charges. Additional protection is provided via anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-phishing functionality.
