LOS ANGELES, CA – October 15, 2009 – Dixon Slingerland, Executive Director of the Youth Policy Institute, proudly announced today that the California Department of Education has awarded YPI nearly $26 million to provide afterschool academic and enrichment programs in twenty-one Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley K-12 schools.
"It is an honor to receive such a significant grant award from the California Department of Education," YPI Executive Director Dixon Slingerland said. He added, "We gratefully accept it in recognition of YPI’s strong track record in afterschool programming, and are excited about the potential to serve thousands of additional students, families, and leaders of tomorrow."
The check presentation is scheduled for the morning of October 20th on the steps of Pacoima Charter Elementary School at 9:30 AM. On hand to announce the five–year grant will be the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, State Senator Gloria Romero – Chair of the Senate Education Committee, Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes (D-Sylmar), LAUSD Board Members Nury Martinez and Tamar Galatzan, and many of the students and families that have benefitted from YPI’s enrichment programs.
"It’s remarkable that YPI received the largest grant award of any entity in the state," said Senator Gloria Romero (D-East Los Angeles). "I applaud YPI’s commitment to serving the families and students of Los Angeles who are in desperate need of these resources.”
With 56 afterschool sites in Los Angeles and serving over 6,300 students with their afterschool programs each and every school day, YPI is not only elevating the academic and social growth of Los Angeles youth through their innovative educational, athletic, technology-based, and career-oriented programs, but they are also now the largest afterschool provider for charter schools in the U.S. YPI is also one of the nation’s largest high school afterschool providers, serving 32 high schools in Los Angeles.
“This is a wonderful day for the Youth Policy Institute and the families of the Northeast San Fernando Valley. With this grant, YPI can continue the excellent work they do in our schools,” said Assemblymember Fuentes.

YPI accomplishes this with more than 900 highly qualified staff operating at 95 program sites throughout the city. YPI has an annual budget of $28 million (including two affiliated charter schools) and offers services in afterschool, job training, preschool, physical education, adult education, computer literacy, parenting, tutoring, and college preparation. All told, YPI currently has a total of $52.6 million in multi-year grants for afterschool programming. Each year YPI helps more than 25,000 youth and adults through its programs.
