Study Island selects Hugh R. O’Donnell Elementary Scool as the School of Excellence recipient

Dallas, Texas – November 10, 2009 – Study Island, a subscription-based online education company, has selected Boston’s Hugh R. O’Donnell Elementary School as the first recipient of the Study Island School of Excellence award.

Dr. Robert Martin, Principal of O’Donnell Elementary, and the faculty of O’Donnell Elementary will receive the award at a reception held at the school November 17, 2009.  The award will be presented by Mike Roseman, Regional Sales Director of Study Island, Suzanne Herron, Massachusetts Account Executive of Study Island, and Rich Prendeville, a Study Island Educational Consultant.

The Study Island School of Excellence award is in recognition of schools that are committed to children’s education and their future.  A School of Excellence is a school that has consistently improved their state testing scores and Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) while using Study Island programs.  Typically these schools have rigorous standards even when there is great adversity to overcome, such as poverty, ESL and special education students, and services for children with disabilities.  These schools use a comprehensive strategy to lead them above and beyond their achievement goals and individual student success.

O’Donnell Elementary has consistently been considered a model school in the city of Boston as well as the state of Massachusetts based on their rate of improvement.  This year the school’s results on the MCAS show half of the students had math scores that rose to or more than 92 percent of other students statewide.

“Study Island has allowed us to develop individual student data profiles in math, ELA, and science,” stated Principal Dr. Martin.  “Using computer technology, teachers can then align instruction in preparation for MCAS.  Study Island has become our computer lab specialty for grades 3, 4, and 5.  It extends classroom instruction to the computer lab, yet uses an electronic instructional modality.”

Study Island offers subscription-based online products that provide standards-based instruction, practice, assessment and productivity tools for teachers and students.  Each of Study Island’s products is specifically built from the requirements for a subject area in a grade level in a particular state, provides real-time reporting on student achievement and offers students immediate feedback and explanations, and when required, remediation content.  By engaging students and providing them with the tools they need to succeed, Study Island enables them to take control of their own learning, boost their confidence and keep them interested in using Study Island products, while creating a culture of academic success.

“We are thrilled to honor Hugh R. O’Donnell Elementary School with the first Study Island School of Excellence award,” said Mike Roseman.  “O’Donnell has partnered with Study Island over the last two years and we applaud Dr. Martin, his dedicated staff, and the families of the O’Donnell school for their commitment to academic excellence.”
