U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan will deliver a keynote speech at the American Association of School Administrators’ (AASA) National Conference on Education, which runs Feb. 11-13 in Phoenix.
Duncan will be a special guest speaker during a session with Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone. Canada will pull from his experience in establishing an innovative social program that works with children and families while reaching for education reform. President Obama has touted the program as one he would like to replicate across the country.
Educational content will be organized around four focus areas. Executive leadership content will focus on how principals and heads of school systems can hone effective leadership skills that build teams, use systems-thinking approaches, and transform public education.
Content in the student achievement category will include hot topics coupled with practical application strategies to help school leaders deal with unions, pay-for-performance issues, and innovative instructional practices.
Sessions focusing on board and superintendent issues will cover ways for leaders to deal with the myriad of issues that come across their desks each day, while building relationships based on effective communication and problem-solving.
District management content will give ideas on cost-effective solutions for innovations in schools and districts, including using technology for data-driven results, social networking, and improving student achievement.
Featured educational sessions will include the case for a longer school year, aligning educational reform and information technology for the 21st century, Web 2.0 and maximizing student and teacher achievement, rethinking administrative evaluation and ongoing growth, multi-dimensional education, aligned system planning for student achievement, terms of the U.S Supreme Court and their impact on public education, making 12th grade meaningful with rigor and relevance, connecting leadership to reading achievement, and professional learning communities and formative assessment for improved student achievement.
The Tipping Point author Malcolm Gladwell will deliver a general session speech focusing on leadership and how we can all be successful, is a must-attend venue for superintendents, cabinet-level staff, principals and board of education members.
Mika Brzezinski, an MSNBC news anchor, has an extensive journalism education and background and will speak during the general session on Feb. 13.
The conference also features “Dare To” speakers, who will motivate attendees with their stories. Greg Bell, author of Water the Bamboo: Unleashing the Potential of Teams and Individuals, will help attendees examine what they can do and ways they can transform school districts.
Jason Ryan Dorsey, the “Gen Y Guy,” teaches education leaders creative and inexpensive ways to bridge the four generations that are now working in education.
