High school students who were behind in credits use online credit recovery courses to catch up and graduate on time

Portland, OR (June 15, 2010) – More than 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students who were at risk of not graduating from high school will receive their diplomas this month with the rest of the CPS Class of 2010 after earning the credits needed to graduate through an innovative virtual learning program launched by CPS in conjunction with Aventa Learning (www.aventalearning.com).

Aventa’s online Credit Recovery program began as a pilot with Chicago Public Schools in 2008. Today, Aventa Learning credit recovery courses as well as original credit courses, including online electives required for graduation and Advanced Placement® classes not otherwise available, are offered at 75 of the Chicago district’s 125 schools to more than 4,000 students.

Last week, Aventa, together with CPS and The Common Ground Foundation, celebrated the success of this year’s graduates at an event in Chicago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNzbB6LI0R0) with 300 of the students and a surprise visit by hip-hop entertainer and urban youth activist, Common. Additionally, Cheryl Hyman, the Chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago and a former high school dropout who later went on to complete her education, addressed the graduates and awarded a two-year community college scholarship to one of the students, whose school had closed.

“The CPS Virtual High School used Aventa Learning this past school year to provide students at Chicago Public Schools an opportunity to erase boundaries and expand their learning options. Students were able to take any course they needed to graduate, and for many students this was the only option they had to get the credits they needed, when they needed them. Previously, if a student failed a course they might have had difficulty repeating that course. Budget cuts made that situation even worse,” said Robin Gonzalez, Manager of Distance Learning at Chicago Public Schools. “With the CPS Virtual School, we have taken down the bureaucratic barriers to graduation and have ensured that every child has access to a high quality, flexible learning option that meets his or her needs.”

“Studies have shown that high school graduates have a significantly higher earning potential over their lifetime compared to dropouts, so we are thrilled that more than 1,000 high school students in Chicago are graduating this month because they were able to take online credit recovery classes,” said Dr. Caprice Young, President and CEO of KC Distance Learning, which operates Aventa Learning.

Typically, when students fail a course, they are given an option to retake the course–usually with the same teacher, using the same curriculum. The Aventa Learning program offers online credit recovery courses to school districts and other educational institutions aiming to help students earn course credit towards high school graduation. CPS credit recovery students take self-paced, asynchronous courses during the school day and at home, supported by CPS learning mentors who provide continual support and feedback through live online chats, email, and other forms of communication, helping keep students on track. These courses are taught by Aventa’s highly qualified online teachers who are state certified, and have no previous history—or preconceived notions—about student success.

Young continued, “We know from our experiences with education innovators in Chicago and other school districts that the majority of at-risk students who previously failed classes are able to successfully recover the credits they need when given the chance to make up those credits online. Rather than having to re-take the entire course and deal with the social pressure of repeating a grade or class, the online learning environment allows students to start the class where their mastery of the subject ends while at the same time offering one-on-one attention and regular assessments that are often not possible in a traditional classroom setting.”
