PLEASANTON, Calif. (June 22, 2010) — At Elluminate, No User Left Behind™ is not simply a tagline; it is the company’s core, governing philosophy. As part of its ongoing mission to create a 21st century learning environment that eliminates barriers for all educators and learners, the company today announced the release of the newest addition to its family of web, audio, video, and social networking solutions optimized for education and training.
Elluminate Live!® V10 focuses on accessibility, providing a richer, more interactive online teaching and learning environment for all participants, including those with disabilities. The new release also offers greater performance and usability. For more information, view the Elluminate Live! V10 Sneak Peek webinar recording. Version highlights include:
• Even greater access than ever before for users with blindness or low vision
• Improved user interface for screen readers means easier-to-use environment for everyone
• Enhanced whiteboard, application sharing, and audio tools for higher-quality collaboration
• Increased engagement and session awareness with new Activity Window
• Better proxy-detecting capabilities for users with stringent security infrastructures
V10 adds to existing Elluminate Live! accessibility support for many disability types: visual, hearing, mobility, and cognitive. For example, those who are deaf or hard of hearing already use integrated closed captioning in live and recorded sessions and multi-stream video for ASL. Breakout rooms are available for one-on-one tutoring, and fully interactive recordings enables users to review sessions as often as needed.
“Higher education consumers worldwide benefit from product improvements that present opportunities for and remove barriers from learning,” said Mark Turner, director for the Center for Accessible Media, California State University Office of the Chancellor. “Often, those improvements provide benefits to those beyond the group they’re initially aimed at. It’s not just about making a better product for those who are disabled. It’s about making a better product for everyone. Elluminate is not just along for the ride. They want to take things to a higher level.” View case study.
“The Activity Window is key, especially for those of us with low vision and blindness,” said Dr. L. Penny Rosenblum, adjunct associate professor, Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies, University of Arizona. “It’s wonderful to have one place to focus, and I like the fact that Elluminate doesn’t put all users in the same box. Users can customize the environment so that it does what they want.”
History of Accessibility
Elluminate’s history of accessibility began with low-bandwidth connectivity and cross-platform support, adding comprehensive functionality designed to enable an increasingly wide range of users to fully engage and participate. For Elluminate Live! V10, an ongoing Accessibility Taskforce, which included a cross-functional Elluminate team, members of the educational accessibility community, and educators and students with disabilities, collaborated on product functionality and testing. The company also made a significant investment in training, testing tools, hardware, and software to ensure accessibility remains a core component of the Elluminate platform.
“Because we live our disability, we know how we can give feedback about what works and what doesn’t,” said Independent Accessibility Consultant Carin Headrick. “It’s all well and good to design something with the best of intentions, but sometimes that results in a partial solution that’s not really a solution at all. I really appreciate that Elluminate initiated their process for hearing from people with disabilities, not just relying on their version of what they think should be a workable solution.”
“Our core No User Left Behind philosophy has guided us for almost 10 years,” said Elluminate President Maurice Heiblum. “When you build in accessibility from the ground up, the end result is a best-in-class experience for all, regardless of geography, economy, or ability. Our user-driven development process results in a universal design optimized for education.”
