Google Inc. is giving researchers nearly a half-million dollars to test the academic value of its rapidly growing online library.

The grants announced July 14 will be used to help pay for 12 humanities projects studying questions that will require sifting through thousands of books to reach meaningful conclusions.

Google is hoping the research will validate its long-held belief that making electronic copies of old books will bring greater enlightenment to the world. The company’s critics, though, have argued that the internet search leader has trampled over copyright laws to build a commanding early lead in digital books so it can boost profits.

The winners of Google’s “digital humanities” awards include a project at George Mason University seeking to draw a more accurate portrait of the Victorian age through a deeper analysis of the vocabulary used in the books from that period.

Other researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Washington are studying tools and techniques for automated library analysis.

The 23 scholars receiving $479,000 in grants are scattered across 15 universities. They’re eligible to apply next year for the remaining $521,000 that Google has budgeted for its digital humanities awards.

“Over the next year, we’ll provide selected subsets of the Google Books corpus—scans, text, and derived data such as word histograms—to both the researchers and the rest of the world as laws permit,” wrote Google’s Jon Orwant in a blog post about the grants.

Google set out in 2004 to make electronic copies of all the books in the world to feed more compelling material into its online search engine and make more human knowledge available to anyone with an internet connection.

But those book-scanning ambitions quickly became bogged down in legal battles over copyright issues that still haven’t been resolved. Google has made digital copies of more than 12 million books so far, but they aren’t all available to see because of a dispute centered on out-of-print books still protected by copyrights.

Google is still awaiting a federal judge’s ruling on a proposed settlement that would give the company the digital rights to the out-of-print books. The U.S. Department of Justice, consumer watchdog groups, and several of Google’s rivals have objected to the agreement on the grounds that the settlement threatens to give Google too much power in the emerging market for digital books.

The projects and researchers receiving Google’s Digital Humanities Research Awards are:

All-digital newsstand coming to college stores

College students will be able to access digitized publications from around the world starting in August, including many that can be incorporated into their course work, after the campus retailing industry teamed up with a digital content distributor to create an online newsstand stocked with 3,000 magazines and books.

The nonprofit National Association of College Stores (NACS), based in Ohio, announced July 12 that it would make the digital resources available through Zinio, a content provider that offers 75,000 publications in 24 languages. The online publications can be accessed through computers, iPhones, iPads, and other mobile devices popular among college students.

NACS officials touted the digital newsstand as the first directed specifically at the college market. Officials did not release the number of campuses that would use the Zinio newsstand when it’s opened later this summer.

The newsstand will offer students access to the latest issues of the trendiest magazines, as well as literary classics such as Beowulf, Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, and more than 100 others. The classics and magazines are searchable through a browse feature on Zinio’s web site.

Any purchase made from the Zinio newsstand will be accessible on any device that has a Zinio application installed on it, officials said.

Mark Nelson, vice president of strategy and development for NACS Media Solutions, a subsidiary of NACS that launched the newsstand with Zinio, said the organization’s foray into providing digital content for students comes in response to the increased demand for web-based reading among college students…

Up to $74,000 to fund off-campus community service programs

The purpose of this program is to provide grants to institutions of higher education (IHEs) participating in the Federal Work-Study to recruit and compensate students (including compensation for time spent in training and for travel) for part-time, off-campus employment directly related to community service. Funds granted to an IHE under this program may only be used to make payments to students participating in work-study programs.


Win $500,000 from Kohl’s to support educational programs

Kohl’s Department Stores is giving people a chance to decide which 20 schools across the nation will each receive grants worth half a million dollars. All public and private elementary, middle and high schools that meet contest criteria are eligible. The winners will be picked through a Facebook contest, in which people can nominate schools and cast votes.

To collect the money, officials from the top 20 vote-getting schools will have to submit applications outlining how the funds will be used to support educational programs. Possibilities include creating a computer lab, starting an art program or saving a music program.


$250,000 to schools to develop part-time masters programs in STEM or foreign language fields

The purpose of the Teachers for a Competitive Tomorrow program is to enable partnerships served by eligible recipients to develop and implement two- or three-year part-time master’s degree programs in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or critical foreign language education for teachers in order to enhance the teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills; or to develop and implement programs for professionals in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or critical foreign language education that lead to a master’s degree in teaching that results in teacher certification.


Win up to $400,000 for support to veteran students

The purpose of this program is to encourage institutions of higher education to develop model programs to support veteran student success in postsecondary education by coordinating services to address the academic, financial, physical, and social needs of veteran students.
