High school students who know their Civil War history can turn their knowledge into college scholarships in the National Civil War Student Challenge, a timed online competition launched by the cable television network HISTORY and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH). The contest—which will award more than $30,000 in college scholarships, including a $15,000 scholarship to the grand-prize winner—begins Thursday, April 7.
HISTORY and HMH are sponsoring the contest as part of their observance of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Over the next four years, HISTORY will air a comprehensive lineup of Civil War-themed programming, exploring all aspects of this pivotal chapter in American history.
Although all U.S. high school students are eligible to participate, the content is geared toward the 11th grade curriculum. The online quiz will be conducted April 7-9. The 30 top-scoring finalists will be invited to take an in-school final exam.
In addition to the $15,000 scholarship grand prize, HISTORY and HMH will award a $7,500 first-place scholarship, a $5,000 second-place scholarship, and seven $1,000 third-place scholarships. Also, any teacher whose student qualifies for the final round of competition will receive $400 in classroom supplies.
