Merit Software has just launched Reading Skill Builder, http://www.meritsoftware.com/software/reading_skill_builder/index.php, a new web-based teaching tool to improve student reading comprehension and literacy skills.

Students who show that they can increase their ability to read increasingly difficult texts tend to succeed as readers. Reading Skill Builder helps students’ make the transition to read at higher levels.

The program finds gaps and provides instruction in specific reading skills such as vocabulary, sequence, fact-opinion, factual recall, inference, and author’s purpose. Readers become alert to details, nuances, and inferences that make up the meaning of a text.

After an assessment, students advance through the program at their own pace. They receive personal help and tips while they work. Whether the student answers correctly or not, the program displays explanations that get students thinking about what they are reading.

As a 100% cloud-based application, the value of Reading Skill Builder goes far beyond its instructional content. Students can use the program online anywhere, any time. Instructors may view, in real-time, pupil time-on-task and scores.

Reading Skill Builder is designed for late elementary and middle school grade levels. English language learners, learning disabled pupils, and remedial readers can also benefit from it.

Merit provides several levels of support for users of its online system. Merit professional development and training help instructors make a difference with their students.

Reading Skill Builder is a web-based program and works with the Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari browsers. Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems are supported. One full year’s access to each level costs $29(US). Attractive classroom and school district licenses are available. Users may evaluate the demo version of the program online; no login is required.
