U Games Summer Challenge Will Help Students Retain Math and Literacy Skills During Long Months Away From School; Practice Kicks-off May 30

New York, May 4, 2011 –Is it likely that your child’s brain shrank last summer? Probably not, but it may have shifted into reverse. According to recent studies, about 40 percent of math skills and 30 percent of language art skills can go out the proverbial open window of summer as youngsters enjoy beach days, family vacations and afternoons by the pool. To put a plug in the summer brain drain, Tabula Digita will once again host the U Games Summer Challenge, an online educational video game tournament.
The competition, which begins on May 30, consists of five rounds of virtual play, each lasting two weeks. Students in grades 3-8 can enter the nationwide virtual tournament by going to www.DimensionU.com/SummerChallenge. Once registered (parental permission is required) students will compete against their peers across the country while at the same time reinforcing their understanding of fractions and complex equations, or reviewing parts of speech and language conventions. That’s because this year, the game-based learning solution features two game selections: the award winning DimensionM, recognized for its captivating cache of lessons that offer students an opportunity to master over 200 unique math skills, and DimensionL the latest immersive game that gives students an exciting way to practice over 200 essential literacy skills.
Student players can join the free competition at any time during the 10-week event even if they did not participate in an earlier round. They can play one of four missions – either in the multi-player format or individually by themselves. Scores will be computed based on game play skills as well as on strategy, academic performance and an immediate “need-to-know the answer” outcomes. All players will be competing for a chance to win gift cards and summer-related prizes like inline skates, inflatable pools, beach volleyball sets, or tents. In addition, five lucky players will be randomly selected to win an iPod Nano each.

Also new this year is a social networking component which encourages students who play the Summer Challenge U Games to build online “learning communities” comprised of friends, family, community members, or even their teachers…anyone who wants to help support the child’s academic efforts in the games during the summer. Participants who earn the highest number of social network points in each tournament round will win prizes separate from those awarded for game play performance. “The general consensus is that most kids lose two months of learning during the summer break,” said Ntiedo Etuk, CEO and co-founder of Tabula Digita. “The U Games Summer Challenge turns this time of year into Summer Brain Gain!”
