BALTIMORE (May 17, 2011) – Connections Learning (, a leading provider of digital learning solutions to the K–12 education community, announced today an exciting new partnership with SportsQuest Academy ( to deliver a high-quality, blended, online learning option for high school student athletes through its on-site private school—SportsQuest University.

Based in greater Richmond, Virginia, SportsQuest offers a residential training program for high performance athletes in approximately 20 Olympic amateur sports. SportsQuest University is the academic component of SportsQuest’s residential program and ensures that resident athletes not only have access to world class sports training, but a high-quality education at the same time. In the months ahead, SportsQuest will continue to expand with the construction of multiple state-of-the-art sports venues and family recreation facilities on its 250 acre campus in greater Richmond, Virginia.

Connections Learning, a division of Connections Education, which also manages the widely known Connections Academy network of virtual K–12 schools, offers a range of quality, affordable digital learning solutions customized to fit a school or organization’s resources and students’ needs. More than 300 schools, school districts, state departments of education and other educational institutions, serving tens of thousands of students throughout the United States and beyond, are already utilizing Connections Learning products and services. Connections Academy graduates continue to be accepted to some of America’s finest colleges and universities such as Harvard, Cornell, NYU, Williams College, UCLA, and Amherst College to name a few. Additionally, Connections Academy proudly reports that in 2010, 63% of our students who were tested scored a 3 or higher (qualified to extremely qualified) on AP exams—compared to 58% of all students nationwide. In addition, many Connections Academy core high school courses are approved by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

This new partnership provides full-time student athletes enrolled in SportsQuest University a high-quality and fully accredited academic program delivered through Connections Learning’s online education platform. The flexibility inherent in online learning affords SportsQuest University students the ability to balance training and academics. The curriculum includes core, enrichment, AP, and Honors courses taught by certified teachers. Enrolled students attend daily academic sessions delivered online yet receive additional academic support by on-site classroom teachers, an approach referred to as the aforementioned “blended learning” which studies have shown produce superior academic gains.

Parents have visibility into their child’s academic performance through an online learning management system called Connexus, and students are supported by an on-demand academic help center called LiveTutor. Students graduate from the accredited academic program and receive official, state recognized, high school diplomas as part of the graduation ceremony.

SportsQuest Academy President, Tony Tucker, commented on the new partnership and what it means for students enrolled in SportsQuest University. “At SportsQuest, we pride ourselves on delivering a world class training opportunity for young athletes who are serious about excelling in their sport. But we also recognize that a strong academic foundation for these young athletes is essential to their training. We are pleased to be working with Connections Learning—an organization that shares our desire to empower students to achieve great things and succeed academically. Their innovative and engaging online learning approach is a great fit for our students who require a personalized and flexible school option.”

Serving elite student athletes, who need a flexible yet rigorous educational program in order to stay on top of their game, is not a new venture for Connections. For the past ten years Connections Academy virtual schools have been helping Olympic figure skaters, Ivy League hockey players, Big E collegiate basketball players and nationally ranked tennis players gain a top-quality education while pursuing their dreams. Students have also earned college athletic scholarships by taking courses that have been approved by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Now, Connections Learning, is proud to bring this same opportunity to the student athletes training at SportsQuest.

“Online learning is especially suited to student athletes who are trying to balance school and training,” commented President for Connections Learning Steven Guttentag. “Parents with students enrolled in Connections Learning courses can feel confident their child is receiving a quality education, delivered by dedicated teachers who are committed to their students’ success.
