CHICAGO – Espresso Elementary, the online, multimedia teaching and learning site for Pre-K through Grade 5, today announced the preliminary results of an efficacy study into the impact of Espresso on student achievement.
In the fall of 2010, Espresso commissioned MIDA Learning Technologies to conduct a study to determine the efficacy of Espresso’s web-based multimedia teaching and learning resources. Ten second-grade classes were selected from three regional school districts in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Over a ten week period, Espresso was integrated into normal mathematics instruction in five of the schools, while the remaining five schools acted as the control group, and maintained the traditional mathematics instruction. Post-test results show that there was a significant difference in student performance between the two groups at the end of this period.
All participants in the research study observed that Espresso increased student engagement and focus on the topics being taught in the classroom. Students were very excited when their time came to work on Espresso and it provided a meaningful learning context resulting in higher student achievement. This finding is consistent with cognitive science theory that promotes multi-sensory approaches to teaching in the early grades.
These preliminary results further strengthen the results of a separate study that has recently been completed in the UK. This study, undertaken by Lancaster University, found that Espresso encourages a child’s deeper and wider learning and, when firmly embedded in lessons over time, leads to greater achievement.
Both these research studies underpin the significant role that technology plays in elementary schools today, an important consideration for schools, districts and government as educational policy evolves and budget challenges continue.
