Texthelp Systems Announces New Suite of Web Apps for Mobile Devices

Powerful Support tools include Read Aloud for Web and Bookshare® eBooks on iPad, iPod Touch, Android tablets, and other Mobile Devices as well as PCs and Macs

Philadelphia, PA, June 28, 2011 — Texthelp Systems, leading provider of award-winning literacy software solutions, today announced an exciting new suite of Assistive Technology Web Apps at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference being held June 27-28 in Philadelphia, PA. The Texthelp Web Apps provide support tools that will work within multiple browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, Firefox) on mobile devices including iPad, iPod Touch, Android tablets, smart phones, PCs, and Macs. The first Apps in the suite will include: Read&Write Web, Bookshare Reader, Speech, and Dictionary. Users will benefit from having Read&Write GOLD features they are familiar with along with instant accessibility and mobility with these powerful web support tools.

Martin McKay, CTO and Founder, Texthelp Systems, states: “Over the last few years, many aspects of computing have moved into the cloud and many new devices have emerged. We believe that new Assistive Technology products must be developed to harness the power of the cloud and allow users access from multiple devices and platforms. Texthelp has already successfully developed several products for the Cloud including Fluency Tutor and SpeechStream, which is used in many online applications (e.g. CAST’s UDL Editions). It has long been our goal to be able to move Read&Write features to the Cloud and these Apps are just the beginning, as more Apps and more functionality are already being planned.”

Texthelp Web Apps include:

  • Read&Write Web – The Read&Write Web toolbar opens within a browser and interacts with web content providing: Text-to-Speech to read html content aloud with dual color highlighting, Dictionary and Picture Dictionary to look up unfamiliar words, Translator to translate selected words into multiple languages, Study Skills to highlight and extract important pieces of information, and Fact Finder to research on the web. Users can also control the speed of the reading voice.
  • Bookshare Reader – The innovative Bookshare Reader allows a user to log in to Bookshare, download or open a Bookshare eBook, read the book aloud with dual color highlighting, and access the same support tools found in Read&Write Web.
  • Speech App – Designed for smaller mobile devices such as phones, Speech allows users to read aloud with color highlighting any typed or pasted text.
  • Dictionary App – Another App meant for smaller devices, Dictionary allows users to look up words and get both text definitions and images.

“Schools are turning more and more to mobile learning devices such as iPads for their students and it is important that they provide AT support to their students on these devices at school, at home, wherever it is needed to suit the on-the-go lifestyle of today’s students. Our customers asked to have support features in Read&Write GOLD available on mobile learning devices and our new Web Apps do that for them.” adds Jack Dolan, President, Texthelp Systems Inc.
