Questions swirl around Michigan Education Achievement System

It’s a school district without students, teachers or buildings. Now its chancellor is hiring a staff without a budget, the Detroit News reports. Questions about Chancellor John Covington, the new Education Achievement System he will operate and its source of funding continue to pile up, with very few answers. Wednesday is Covington’s first day on the job in Detroit, where he will head the state’s new recovery district for failing schools, starting with classrooms in Detroit Public Schools. Covington’s first order of business is hiring eight executive staffers for the EAS, including deputy chancellor for instructional support and educational accountability, chief of staff and chief officer for business and fiscal affairs…
