Illinois court: Tenured CPS teachers don’t have rehire rights

According to the Associated Press [1], in a 5-2 vote this Friday, the Illinois Supreme Court has made a ruling that laid-off tenured teachers in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system do not have the right to be rehired at a later time. The decision followed a major debate after about 1,300 teachers were laid off and then 715 were rehired, but preference was not given to tenured instructors. Despite the nearly split ruling, the Illinois Supreme Court stated that state law does not require the Chicago Board of Education to give preference to laid-off tenured teachers when rehiring.
