Alexandria, VA (06/19/2012)—ASCD, the global leader in developing and delivering innovative programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner, has created two new professional development DVDs. These new releases feature the groundbreaking work of leading education experts and empower viewers to implement Common Core State Standards using the Understanding by Design® framework and apply the art and science of teaching to effective supervision.
The first DVD, Unpacking the Common Core Standards Using the UbD Framework, helps schools and districts address the challenges of implementing curriculum and assessments rooted in the new standards. Presented by the creators of the Understanding by Design framework (the UbD™ framework) Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins, this DVD introduces viewers to key UbD framework concepts that are closely tied to implementation of both English language arts and literacy standards, and content and practice standards for mathematics. Viewers will also learn how to use the UbD framework’s backward-design approach to create units and lessons that reflect the rigorous goals of the Common Core State Standards.
The second DVD, Effective Supervision: Supporting the Art and Science of Teaching, offers administrators and other education leaders the training and insight they need to take their supervisory practice to the next level. Viewers will develop a clear understanding of researcher and author Robert J. Marzano’s framework for observing classroom instruction. They will also observe teachers in various classrooms, listening in as Marzano and a panel of educators identify crucial aspects of instruction that can help teachers improve their effectiveness. Educators can preorder this DVD from the ASCD Online Store.
The May 2011 ASCD book Effective Supervision: Supporting the Art and Science of Teaching by Robert Marzano, David Livingston, and Tony Frontier is also available as a complement to the DVD. This landmark publication makes clear exactly what education leaders can do to support teachers in their practice of the art and science of great teaching. This publication is also available as an e-book.
