Canadian teachers on Tuesday protested proposals for a two-year pay freeze and curbs to their collective bargaining rights to help pay down Ontario province’s $14.8 billion budget deficit, the AFP reports. Waving placards that read “Stop bullying me,” an estimated 5,000 teachers gathered outside of the Ontario legislature, accusing Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty of “betraying” them, live television showed. Public broadcaster CBC said the demonstrators were joined by peers from across Canada in a massive show of solidarity, while thousands of students in neighboring Quebec province continued raging against tuition hikes. McGuinty won elections in 2003, 2007 and last October with the support of teachers.
