Stamford, CT (September 14, 2012) The Stamford, CT office of top international design and architecture firm Perkins Eastman joined the Capitol Region Education Council in South Windsor, CT for the September 10 groundbreaking ceremony of the new International Magnet School (IMS). The school’s design was guided by the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which serves as the curriculum and foundation for day-to-day goals and overall mission. The three-level, 60,000 sf school is designed for 435 students from grades pre-K through 5. The school is scheduled to open in January 2014.

The floor plan is centered on a two-story “globally connected” library/media center, with other more intimate areas strategically placed around the building for collaborative learning and instruction outside the classroom. The theme of interactive exploration is expressed through the use of multiple display walls and casework. Art and music rooms, along with community spaces including the “blue box” hybrid theater-gymnasium, help to activate the public face of the building. Smaller-scaled grade-level neighborhoods support the varying developmental needs of both lower and upper elementary students. The Magnet School is designed to meet the High Performance Building Standards of the State of Connecticut.

Perkins Eastman Principal Fritz Morris notes “Natural light is a guiding design principle of the new facility, as well as utilizing local agricultural vernacular building themes which dot the community and rural landscape. Natural light is introduced into the center of the building via an outdoor classroom that also serves as a wayfinding circulation element.”

The site’s natural landscape will be used to create nature trails, discovery areas, planting beds, fields, playscapes, and playgrounds. The building also responds to the natural landscape with the use of warm façade and roof materials. Designed as a true community facility, IMS is able to be safely and securely accessed after hours to support students, parents, and the greater South Windsor community.
