Moses Lake School District 161 Adopts Live Online Speech Therapy to Help Fill Shortage of Speech-Language Pathologists
PresenceLearning serves more than 70 students in grades 2-12
SAN FRANCISCO, November 1, 2012 – To help address a shortage of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), Moses Lake School District 161 in Moses Lake, Washington, adopted PresenceLearning, the leader in online speech therapy services for K-12 students. Through the adoption, the district is able to provide students who have special needs with engaging, high-quality online speech therapy while better supporting – and lessening the caseload for – its existing SLPs.
“As we began to explore alternative options to address the shortage of SLPs in our district, we were focused on finding a solution that would both support our current SLP staff and the students they serve,” said Darcy Johnson, Special Services Director of Moses Lake School District 161. “We implemented PresenceLearning’s services at the beginning of this school year to meet this need and the results have been great so far – the students love it, their parents are in support of it and our SLPs find great value in it.”
Moses Lake School District 161 is located in a rural, yet growing, area of the state and has a student population of approximately 7,000, more than 400 of whom receive special education services. Of those students with special needs, PresenceLearning currently works with more than 70 who were determined by the district to be good candidates to benefit from online speech therapy.
“From training to implementation to ongoing support, PresenceLearning has done a great job in working with us to ensure that our adoption of online speech therapy has been a smooth process,” said Johnson. “We can really see the benefits of such services in our district and the potential for more students to use it in the future.”
