Free LRMI Workshop Scheduled for January 12 at Stanford U.

Educational resources metadata tagging project to be featured during SLC Camp Bay Area event

WILMINGTON, DE, December 18, 2012 – The Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) is offering a free LRMI Workshop on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Stanford University’s Knight Management Center from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (PST). Educational content publishers and curators, as well as those who provide metadata services to the education community, are invited to attend the day-long workshop, which will take an in-depth look at this new initiative to improve search and delivery of quality learning resources.

The LRMI, co-led by the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) and Creative Commons, has developed a common metadata specification for marking up educational resources on the Web. An extension of’s work, the LRMI tagging schema will enable publishers of educational content to assign meaningful context to their resources, such as subject area, grade level, and alignment to learning standards. At the same time, the LRMI markup provides rich metadata to search engines and other delivery platforms, ultimately connecting teachers and students with the exact resources they need at the precise moment they need them.

The free LRMI workshop will help attendees understand:

• the origins and current status of the project, including its ties to (a consortium involving the world’s leading search engines, Microsoft Bing, Google, Yahoo!, and Yandex)
• the specification development process
• how the LRMI relates to existing tagging standards
• how it ties in with other “Big Data” initiatives in education, such as the Learning Registry and the Shared Learning Collaborative (SLC)
• what tagging tools and guidelines are available to help organizations get started with tagging their content

Attendees will also have exclusive early access to a prototype copy of an LRMI and Learning Registry Implementation Guide being developed by AEP, SLC, and Educational Systemics.

The LRMI workshop, which will be held in conjunction with a “codeathon” event hosted by the SLC, will provide opportunities to network with individuals who are driving the initiative and those who are purchasing and implementing instructional resources based, in part, on their LRMI metadata tags. This joint effort provides a unique opportunity to see firsthand how the LRMI will impact the future of educational resource delivery.
