New ed-tech products abound at TCEA 2013


More than 450 companies showcased their ed-tech products at TCEA 2103.

During the 2013 Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) conference in Austin earlier this month, we met with dozens of educational technology companies to learn what they’re up to.

Recognizing major trends such as mobile learning, flipped learning, and “bring your own device” initiatives, many ed-tech companies showcased new products that address these growing phenomena in schools—such as mobile apps, a mobile charging cart that can recognize different devices and charge each one appropriately, and a lesson capture system that’s extremely easy to use.

Here are some of the key announcements made at the show, one of the nation’s largest ed-tech events.

School AV and presentation tools

A document camera that streams live, annotatable video to iPads; a mobile device charging cart that can identify various devices and deliver just the right charge to each; and a voice-activated system that automates the recording and sharing of class presentations:

New software for curriculum and instruction

Mobile apps for education were all the rage at TCEA 2013, as developers of classroom software announced new apps for teaching grammar, learning algebra on Android devices, and turning iPads into collaborative learning tools.

School network and communications systems

An Australian maker of web security software is making a big push into the U.S. education market by offering 10 school districts free one-year licenses of its product.

A Texas firm that designs and hosts school websites discussed how its services—which are 93-percent eRate eligible—are saving school administrators time and money, while improving school communications.
