Education executive most recently served as CEO of Pearson School
NEW YORK, March 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — McGraw-Hill Education today announced that Peter Cohen, most recently CEO of Pearson School, will be president of McGraw-Hill School Education Group, a division of the company that serves both the PreK-12 and assessment markets. Mr. Cohen will replace McGraw-Hill School Education President Dan Caton, who recently announced his retirement after 43 years in the education industry.
Mr. Cohen has been at Pearson since 2008, serving as chief executive officer of Pearson School, the company’s PreK-12 division. Mr. Cohen’s 17 years of experience in the education industry also includes positions as the top executive of Educate, Inc. and Sylvan Learning. He has also held senior positions at The Pet Practice, Nutrisystem, Inc. and Circle K. Mr. Cohen is a graduate of the University of Redlands.

The announcement of Mr. Cohen’s appointment comes at an important time for the McGraw-Hill School Education Group. In December 2012, McGraw-Hill School Education implemented a plan to accelerate its progress toward becoming a leader in digital learning solutions that saw the company optimize its product mix and improve its product development processes to promote innovation and collaboration. This year, school districts around the country will begin implementing McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders, the industry’s first reading program for Grades K-6 built from the ground up to promote the higher-level understanding and advanced reading skills required by the Common Core State Standards. The program was authored by several of the educators who led the development of the new standards.
CTB/McGraw-Hill has also established itself as a leader in the development of materials to help states and schools transition to the Common Core State Standards. In 2012, the company began working with two state-led consortia to develop the assessments that will be used by schools across the country to gauge students’ progress toward meeting the new standards. CTB has also been leveraging its expertise in developing assessments of adult education. Last week, New York awarded CTB with a three-year contract to develop a new high school equivalency exam for the state’s adult learners.
