National Mother’s Day Contest Gives Kids a Chance to Write About How Their Moms Are a Gift
Bridgeway Academy Awards Prizes for the Most Unique and Touching Mother’s Day Essay

(May 6, 2013) Allentown, PA – Bridgeway Academy of Catasauqua announced the winner’s of its 2013 “Gift of My Mom Writing Contest” online, after a tough period of deliberation. A bevy of heartfelt entrants made it a difficult decision for contest judges and Bridgeway CEO Jessica Parnell. Submissions were varied, and included touching stories of what the love of a mother can do for a child, even when they are not biologically connected.
Finalists were first singled out by an online public voting process, and then the ultimate winners for each age bracket were announced. Regarding the entrants, Parnell commented, “It’s really endearing to hear from our children what they feel inside about their moms, and in their own words. Every single entry was fabulous. Moms, please don’t ever forget just how important a role you play in your child’s life.”
The contest was open to all students from any school district, and essay entries describing “how your mom is a remarkable gift in your life” were submitted through Bridgeway’s Facebook page. The prize for each category was a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com. According to contest coordinator Cara Rutledge, it was the Academy’s second successful year of hosting the contest, and all entries can be viewed online through Facebook (http://a.pgtb.me/cw71Qs).
Elizabeth Glassic, of Allentown, PA was the 3rd to 6th grade category winner. “My mom takes walks with me and my brother and plays with me on the Wii. My mom helps me clean up my room. We bake cookies and brownies together. We have fun together. I love my mom very much!” she emphatically stated in her essay.
Ayanna Ocasio, who is originally from Lititz, PA but is now residing overseas with her parents, was the winner of the Pre-K through 2nd grade category, with an entry entitled “My Special Mommy.” Even at such a young age, Ayanna said that she knows her mom does special things for her all the time, and that she seems to know what she needs.
An amazing tale was told by junior Bri Ralph, of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, whose mom literally “saved her life” by adopting her at seven years old from a very troubled home, and giving her a fresh, loving, inspiring new start. Bri blossomed under her new mom’s loving care, and is now working toward her dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
Of her adopted mom Bri said, “No one has ever pushed me as hard, cared for me more, or encouraged me to be who I am more than she has. She’s always behind me when I fall, waiting to pick me up and place me back on my feet again; she is the best mother someone could have, though I may be just a little biased! I do, however, know that it takes a huge heart to lift a child out of the kind of situation I was in and change their life, and that is something that my mother has, for sure.”
Bri’s mother was incredibly touched by her daughter’s winning entry. “When I read her paper, I was moved, and it was surprising to see that she really felt that way about me – especially facing the challenge of not being her birth mother. It really opened up my eyes to allow us to have our relationship grow even more!”
