BURNSVILLE, MINN (May 6, 2013) – Recently, the Orono School District in Long Lake, Minnesota, embarked on a journey to develop, build, and outfit a new language arts curriculum for grades Kindergarten through five. The project was led by Beth Pearson, the district’s literacy specialist, with the full support of district leadership.

One of the district’s first steps was to hire Jennifer McCarty Plucker, EdD, a well respected literacy consultant, to assess district needs, inventory assets, and design a balanced curriculum. Working closely with Pearson, Plucker incorporated Common Core State Standards and Social Studies standards to build a solid language arts curriculum.

Once the curriculum framework was in place, the district turned to Mackin for the needed curriculum materials. The Classroom Services professionals set to work identifying print and digital resources to fit the guidelines and units of study for each grade level. In addition, Mackin provided organizational solutions to track and preserve the resources for years to come.

“Working with Mackin to compile text sets for our integrated units of study allowed us to customize our lists to meet our needs, consider quality titles that were new to us, and include a wide range of material formats,” said Pearson. “The people at Mackin were responsive and flexible as we reworked and revised our lists to align with the standards embedded in the units. We are excited to get the texts into the hands of our teachers and students.”

Mackin Educational Resources has a long, rich history of supplying libraries, schools, and districts around the world with the books, eBooks, and digital resources needed. With this project for the Orono District, Mackin identified, ordered, and processed a balanced mix of fiction and nonfiction titles, leveled texts, big books, and eBooks.

“Our Mackin team was pleased to work with Beth Pearson and the Orono School District to build customized, smart solutions for their new curriculum,” said Randal Heise, co-founder and president of Mackin Educational Resources. “We fully support collaborative efforts that benefit students and the cause of literacy.”
