BURNSVILLE, MINN (May 14, 2013) – Mackin Educational Resources is committed to the cause of literacy. However, that commitment goes beyond the financial bottom line and extends deeply into the hearts of its employees. That dedication to literacy was demonstrated on April 23, 2013, as nearly 30 volunteers went to various locations throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota-area to give away books in honor of World Book Night.

From transit stations to youth centers to senior housing facilities, Mackin’s employees spread across the area to share their love of literacy and to hand out free books to everyone who would accept them. At the end of the evening, 560 books had been distributed.

“The distribution went well,” said Jill Wohlman who shared her books at Inver Glen Senior Living in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. “The seniors were waiting anxiously when I arrived. I heard several ‘thank yous’, plans for sharing, and one specifically said how nice it was to get a brand new book instead of used. They were quite grateful and asked it if would be happening again next year.”

“I went to a chemically free teen/young adult coffeehouse,” added Amy Baum who gave books to patrons of The Depot Coffee House in Hopkins, Minnesota. “There was an overwhelmingly positive acceptance, and the title was just right for this audience. They were all intrigued and said they would love to read a book—something many couldn’t remember doing for pleasure in a very long time.”

“One of the things that I took away from this experience” reflected Katie Schutts who handed out books with her daughter at the Metro Transit Station, “was that the people who obviously had less financially were so much more appreciative and interested in what World Book Night was. It was fun to have my eight-year-old daughter there with me to get to experience the joy in giving something to someone and having a very positive reaction. I am betting she’ll remember it for a long time.”

World Book Night U.S. is an extension of an ambitious global campaign to encourage reading by giving away thousands of specially printed paperbacks on one day. Titles are selected each year through several rounds of voting by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians. World Book Night first began in the United Kingdom in 2010 and expanded to include the United States in 2012.
