July: Five education grants you don’t want to miss


School funding difficulties show no sign of abating, and school budgets are stretched to the limit. Many educators and administrators rely on school grants to fund important projects and opportunities for students.

During the beginning of every month, the editors of eSchool News compile a list of the most current education grants expiring soon—from STEM engagement to school lunch programs. You don’t want to miss out on these school funding opportunities for teachers, students, parents, and administrators!

1. Grants of $5K or more for grades 6-12

Wanted: Classroom Innovators! Toshiba America Foundation accepts applications from teachers who are passionate about making science and mathematics more engaging for their students. 6-12 Grant requests for $5,000 or less are accepted on a rolling basis, throughout the calendar year. 6-12 Grant requests for $5,000 or more are accepted and reviewed twice a year – August 1 and February 1 each year. 2. Up to $100K for the arts

The guiding principle of “Art Works” is at the center of everything we do at the NEA. “Art Works” refers to three things: the works of art themselves, the ways art works on audiences, and the fact that art is work for the artists and arts professionals who make up the field. To make “art work,” the NEA has included the advancement of innovation as a core component of its mission as a way to ensure the vitality of the arts. Deadline: August 8, 2013. 3. Up to $10K for home energy projects

America’s Home Energy Education Challenge gives students the chance to LEARN about energy, DEVELOP techniques for reducing energy consumption, and SAVE money in their own homes by reducing household energy use. Deadline: November 15, 2013. 4. $5,500 awards for science teachers

These awards promote the innovative use of data collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom. Deadline: November 30, 2013. 5. Salad bars for school lunch programs

Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools is a comprehensive grassroots public health effort to mobilize and engage stakeholders at the local, state and national level to support salad bars in schools. Our vision is to significantly increase salad bars in schools across the country until every child has the choice of healthy fruits and vegetables every day at school. Deadline: December 31, 2013.
